Some yoga students have
talked about how the practice causes them to be so finely calibrated that the
slightest misstep or deviation in their personal life can be reflected on the
mat the next morning. One teacher once
told me she had become so damn healthy that if she ate one cookie the
night before, she would feel it in her practice.
I did not need much
calibration to know that my practice this morning would suck. An excess of masala dosas, mounds of biryani
and a delivery from Pizza Hut made sure of that.
We had a special led class
this morning, after a surprise two days off. Before the unexpected hiatus, I was making small but steady “progress”
in the physical poses, getting smiles and praise from Sharath (“very good!”). So this morning, I did not look forward to
letting him down. As usual for led class,
I was last into the shala, but this time, even the spaces in the waiting room,
and on the stage, were full. The place
was completely packed – except for the finishing room! The men’s finishing room is a dark place off
to the side, with a relatively narrow doorway. What a perfect place for me to both show up for practice and hide at the
same time! With Sharath calling out the breaths and poses
in the main room, surely he wouldn’t leave the class and come into the
finishing room.
Wrong. I should have known there would be no
escape. When my problem poses came up, Sharath
left the main room and just walked right in. In between pulling my arms in the obscurity of the finishing room, he
stuck his head out of the door and shouted the instructions for the rest of the
class. As always, he did not seem to be
bothered by my retardation. He thought
the whole thing was funny.
By the way, I spoke way too
soon when I said the shala was getting extremely hot, and that this seemed to
signal the approach of Summer. If Summer
was approaching, then lately it has been in full retreat. Mornings have been downright cold, at least
on the way to practice. Stay tuned for further fascinating meteorological updates.
And I always feel like I'M the last one in the door!! I don't know how everyone else does it. My roommate was right next to me & somehow she ended up in the front row. Granted she's been here 3x and knows everyone & I'm a newbie loner sort of person.
I am really not into all these led classes.
